The Meaning of “Islah”

Islah, or al-Islah, is the Arabic word for repair, reform. The author Josef Meri writes that in the Koran, Islah means “to restore oneself or to reconcile people with one another, to make peace.”

The word Islah is used most commonly today in Arabic to represent the idea of reform, although this usage was not widespread until the modern reform movements of the 19th and 20th centuries. It is a common word used for various religious and political purposes, as well as personal and place names.
